Typhoon Gay
Find out more about Typhoon Gay at WikipediaThis small museum, built in 1994 and covering nearly 3 acres, is a two-storey building. The museum displays are on the upper floor, while the lower floor contains a library and small refreshments / rest area.
The displays cover the geography of the province, the historical development of the community, important historical events, and the cultural heritage of the province. The numerous explanatory notices are all in both Thai and English.
Major displays include:
- Dioramas of the history of Chumphon
- A sound-and-light show about the destruction caused to Chumphon in 1989 by Typhoon Gay (in Thai, and intended mainly for Thai schoolchildren, but interesting nevertheless)
- A small display covering the defence of Chumphon against a Japanese attack in 1941 by the local military cadets (f you are interested in this it may also be worth paying a visit to the Young Soldier monument)
- Don't miss the video of the shadow puppets. You don't need to understand Thai to appreciate the humour!
