For Further Information
It's worth paying a visit to the Chumphon Museum to find out a little bit more about this important event in the history of Chumphon.
There's a potentially interesting website at geocities entitled Thailand And The Second World War, but as of 27th April 2006 the pages on Chumphon are not available [N.B. since this site is hosted on Yahoo! Geocities, it will probably disappear in mid 2009].
On 8th December 1941, the day after the Japanese entered World War II (with the attack on Pearl Harbour) Japanese troops began an invasion of Thailand. Soldiers landed near the mouth of Chumphon River, and from there made an assault on the Tha Nang Sang Bridge. Miltary cadets, along with local police, regular soldiers and civilians fought against the invaders.
This monument commemorates the bravery of the 23 military cadets from the military school at Chumphon who were involved in this action. There are similar monuments in other parts of Thailand, as this was not an isolated event.
There are many other places of interest in Chumphon province.
